New Farmers Market Brings Fresh Produce to Liberty Heights

Fresh Food, Finally

Liberty Heights residents woke to a different kind of Saturday morning last weekend as the long-awaited Liberty Heights Community Farmers Market opened its doors — or rather, its pop-up tents — for the first time.

Located in the parking lot of the former Lincoln Elementary School, the market brings together 18 local vendors offering everything from organic vegetables to artisan breads and locally-roasted coffee.

Filling a Critical Gap

The neighborhood has been classified as a food desert for over a decade, with the nearest full-service grocery store more than two miles away — a difficult trip for residents without cars.

“We’ve been fighting for this for years,” said Debra Henson, president of the Liberty Heights Neighborhood Association. “This isn’t just about kale and quinoa. It’s about dignity. It’s about kids being able to walk to get an apple instead of a bag of chips from the corner store.”

Vendors and Offerings

  • Soul Food Sundays — prepared meals from local caterers
  • Green City Growers Co-op — seasonal vegetables at 20% below grocery prices
  • The Bread Stand — fresh-baked sourdough and rye
  • Mama Rosa’s Preserves — small-batch jams and pickles

SNAP Benefits Accepted

Crucially, the market accepts SNAP/EBT benefits and offers a “Double Up” program that matches SNAP dollars up to $20 per visit — meaning low-income families get twice the produce for their money.

The market runs every Saturday from 8 AM to 1 PM through November.
